Grapes Used In Texas

A Grape Paradise!

That's how Texas has often been described in the past. Roughly eighty percent of the grape varieties found in the United States, grow in Texas. Now granted, some of those varieties are not ideal wine grapes, though throughout the centuries many have experimented with the likes of the Mustang and Muscadine grape for winemaking, with varied success.

Due to its size and climate variations, Texas is actually several wine countries in one state. Fortunately, a coordinated research effort over the past 30 years has provided winegrowers a comprehensive 'what-to-plant-where' map. Humdity, disease, and temperature extremes dictate what will thrive in a given region -- be it the misty forests of east Texas, the humid coastal plains, or the vast flatlands of west Texas. Research into how grapes respond to the various microclimates in Texas continuestoday, as winemakers and vineyards managers try to coax the 'new gold' from Texas soils. Now the grapes:

These are the Old Standby's in modern Texas viticulture. These grapes have done well in all regions of Texas except the coastal plains area:

Within the last few years there has been increased interest in the classic Rhone varietals and warm temperature grapes grown in Europe. The lastest wave of winegrowers such as Pillar Bluff Vineyards and Alamosa Creek Winery have had success with the following varietals:

  • Syrah
  • Tempranillo
  • Viognier
